Max on Special Education

I believe we can do so much more for our special needs students. My nephew has autism, and I have seen the challenges of parents with special need students. The drastic increase in the number of our children with disabilities does present significant challenges for our schools and resources. We have to think creatively about how to appropriately support these students and not treat them with ‘check the box’ thinking. The good news? Some of the biggest improvements don’t need more money—just more heart and attention.

What I Want to Change:

Availability. As a parent of a special needs student, do you feel like you have an adequate channel to the school and School Committee? I believe parents feel stuck when an issue comes up. I’ll make sure the School Committee is there for you, ready to listen and help.

Accountability. The School Committee has the power to make sure the administration follows the rules—laws, policies, everything. I’ll push for honest evaluations that check if 504 plans and IEPs are being followed, so all students get the support they deserve.

I’m here to work with you and make our schools better for all our kids. Let’s do this together—reach out anytime!
